ABOUT COVID-19

The novel coronavirus is a new coronavirus that has not been previously identified. The virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), is not the same as the coronaviruses that commonly circulate among humans and cause mild illness, like the common cold.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus.

The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person, through contact or from droplets spread through the air. That is why CDC says to wash hands often, sanitize your frequently touched items, and stay 6-feet away from other people (social distancing)

Bastrop County Local Governments are working together to prevent, prepare for, respond to, recover from and mitigate against COVID-19. Please do your part and stay home as much as possible.

PREVENTION

The best way to prevent infection is to take precautions to avoid exposure to this virus by staying home. The rest of the precautions are similar to the precautions you take to avoid the flu. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends these everyday actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, including:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Wear a face covering in public when social distancing cannot be maintained.

• Stay home when you are sick.

• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.

**Minimizing exposure is especially important for people who are 65 or older or who have an underlying health condition like heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, high blood pressure or cancer. People in those groups have a higher risk of developing severe disease if they do get COVID-19, and the safest thing for them during an outbreak will be to stay home as much as possible and minimize close contact with other people. To get ready, they should talk to their doctor about getting additional prescription medications and have enough household items and groceries on hand to stay home as needed.
